Tue, Aug 11, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

6 Week Sacred Flow

Studio Shakti · 2372 St. Claude Ave. Ste. 200 New Orleans, LA 70117

Sacred Flow is an improvisational movement class designed by Karla Marie to help you reconnect with the wisdom of your own body. Rooted in exploration rather than choreography, this class invites dancers of all levels to move intuitively, using personal experience, sensation, rhythm, and emotion as creative guides. No prior dance experience is necessary. Interested? At Studio Shakti New Orleans Don’t get me wrong. THIS IS A DANCE CLASS> this is not a trance or free movement class. You will be guided through elements of modern dance, belly dance, ballet, jazz. and other dance forms, but only as an influence to your movement. Through concepts such as weight shift, balance, grounding, musicality, and spatial awareness, students build confidence and freedom in movement while developing a deeper relationship with their bodies. Rather than focusing on mastering a single dance style, Sacred Flow offers a space to explore movement as an evolving personal practice and artistic language. This class is equally welcoming to advanced dancers seeking a deeper improvisational practice and to beginners curious about expressive movement in a supportive environment or wishing to be introduced to dance instruction as an adult. Dancers with a foundation in belly dance will especially benefit from exploring technique through the lens of improvisation and tarab — the deeply emotional and transcendent state of musical connection often described in Middle Eastern arts as becoming fully immersed in the feeling, spirit, and emotional resonance of the music. Through Sacred Flow, technique becomes not just performance, but embodiment.

Fet Gede - Haitian Day of the Dead Festival

Sun, Nov 1, 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Fet Gede - Haitian Day of the Dead Festival

New Orleans Healing Center · 2372 Saint Claude Ave

The New Orleans Healing Center and La Source Ancienne Ounfo invite the public to the annual Day of the Dead and Fet Gede (Haitian Day of the Dead) celebration. For over four decades, this vibrant, FREE, community-centered event has offered a space to honor ancestors and celebrate life through deep-rooted cultural traditions. Held at the New Orleans Healing Center, the evening features beautifully crafted local artist altars, a lively art and craft market, food vendors, and a Haitian rum happy hour to kick off the festivities. Attendees are welcome to bring photos and remembrances of their own loved ones to place on the main stage community altar. The heart of the evening begins with a powerful, traditional Vodou ceremony to invoke the Gede spirits, followed by a closing procession to feed the dead, pass flames, and share multi-tradition prayers. Guests are highly encouraged to immerse themselves in the experience by wearing white with a purple headscarf, or combinations of purple and black. You are also welcome to bring traditional offerings for the spirits, such as rum, cigars, peppers, or flatbreads, as the community gathers to ensure the memories of those who have passed remain vibrant and alive.
